John Nousaine

John Nousaine fishing in the Duluth Harbor in Duluth, Minnesota John Nousaine left this earth on July 25th, 2025, but his remarkable legacy will live on forever. For 28 years, John served as the fearless leader of indiGO, leaving an indelible mark on the Independent Living Movement. His contributions were immense, and he achieved them all while pursuing a life full of adventure.

John’s adventures were as diverse as they were inspiring. He loved skiing, volunteering at ski events, playing wheelchair basketball with The Flyers, fishing on Lake Superior, hunting, attending concerts, canoeing, going on safaris, and scuba diving around the world. Through these activities, he shared countless moments with family and friends he loved deeply. John highly valued these relationships, and his warmth and charisma meant that he made new friends wherever he went. Being in John’s company was a chance to be captivated by his stories and his infectious enthusiasm for life.

When not on an adventure, John was a tireless advocate for disability rights at the local, state, and national levels. His impact was monumental. John was pivotal in passing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), bringing Assistive Technology programs to Wisconsin’s Independent Living Centers (ILCs), improving sidewalk accessibility in Superior, and creating the Rendezvous adaptive recreation event. His efforts extended further, bringing the Department of Transportation and Native American Independent Living Grant Programs to indiGO, incubating the Midstate Independent Living Center, and launching a Personal Care Program, among many other achievements.

John’s life was a testament to his dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better, more inclusive place. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift countless lives for years to come.

In memory and honor of John, we have established the John Nousaine Assistive Technology Memorial Fund to support our Assistive Technology Loan and Demonstration Program. This fund will help maintain the inventory of assistive devices, replace worn-out equipment, and cover the costs of assistive technology for low-income individuals.

We are deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue John’s legacy through this initiative.
